If I remember correctly, I was a missionary when I first heard or at least understood the three-fold mission of the church. Perfect the saints, missionary work, temple work. I think the wording is a little different today but the objective is still the same.
All three goals work together to help us focus on becoming more Christlike. That really should be our focus and aim. Anything else should fall by the wayside.
