Cooper walked slowly to his hotel room and smiled. He ran his fingers through his hair out of habit. If his dad were here he would tell him to get a haircut. Cooper paused at the thought of his dad and shook his head to change his thoughts back to his plan. The night had been what he would consider a success. His plan was working. So far anyway. A week earlier he didn’t touch one thing in the casino. Not even a slot machine. He spent his time observing and making mental notes. It was time well spent. His first night sitting at the tables he won $10,000. Not too much to draw attention. Just enough. Vegas is a big town with plenty of casinos. All he needed was patience and he would leave town a very rich man. Not that becoming rich was his goal. He planned to donate most of his winnings to charity. No, this was a game to him. He was doing it for the simple reason he could. And he was bored.

Satan wants to make us miserable. God wants us to be happy. Read that again. Satan wants us to lose our freedom. The best way he accomplishes that is by enticing temptations that we choose to indulge in and lose the Spirit of God. On the other hand, God wants us to use our choices to be happy by freely living under His law and bounds.

In the movie City Slickers (1991), Curly tells Mitch the secret of life. “One thing. Just one thing.” Mitch asks, “What is the one thing?” To which Curly replies “That’s what you have to find out.” Now, I’m not going to profess I know what that “one thing” is for everyone but I will give a suggestion on one thing that may be a lifetime pursuit. That is to be a good person.

Love means that yes, we are connected
There is a common notion these days that we are independent creatures. “Live your life” as you want to or need to. Yes, I agree this is quite compelling. Yes, I agree that no one should live their life based on another person’s ideals or worse, wants. You need to live your life to the best of your ability and according to the dictates of your own conscience. But, you have to realize there is a caveat to that. A life filled with love means you are not truly as independent as you think. Your actions will affect others.

When reality of it all settles in and stinks
In 1985, I went to the movie house with my friends and watched The Goonies. Actually, I’m just assuming I did because I’m from a small town and on Friday nights my friends and I were usually either at the Family Recreation Center or we were at the movies. I don’t actually remember my first time watching The Goonies. It has become one of those I have watched so much that I can’t really remember a time before I knew Mikey and the gang. I will say that from the first watch I felt like an honorary Goonie. Thankfully, it wasn’t until many years later that I discovered otherwise.
