Not to detract from the analogy Elder Renlund used but to try and put it in my language here are my thoughts about faith and works.
One of my most special spots I like to visit is Yellowstone National Park. It is in the northwest corner of Wyoming and is, in my opinion, a blueprint of heaven. Now, I can travel to Yellowstone in a matter of hours from my home. But to arrive at my destination I need to put myself on the roads that connect my home and the Park. The Park is always there. The road is always there. But I have to actually put myself on that road if I want to arrive at Yellowstone. I have to use the road and I have to have fuel to move me from here to there. There is no other way. Tele-porting has not been invented yet.
