In Doctrine and Covenants section 9, we learn from Oliver Cowdery’s example about the gift of the Holy Ghost. “Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.”
From the time we are in primary, we learn about the gift of the Holy Ghost. We call it a gift because it is a privilege and a blessing to receive. But we often neglect the fact that there are certain things we must learn to do to learn how to use this gift. Maybe because it’s a gift we expect we will just naturally know how to use it and to speak the language of the Spirit.
I know in my case, this has not been true. I have had to learn how to listen and speak in the language of the Holy Spirit so that I can utilize this blessing to its full capacity. I’m always thankful for these instructions we receive from seasoned leaders with a lifetime of experience to learn from
