I almost hit caroljones today.

not on purpose – I think.

I turned the corner

and there she was, walking to work.

I slammed on my brakes.

she stopped and looked at me

with wide eyes and a nervous air.

I think that is what a rabbit looks like when an eagle circles above.

I clean-mouth cursed (“booger-snot-teepee!”) and waited.

she continued to look at me with wide eyes.

I waved for her to continue.

she finally resumed her walk, as a prisoner walking the plank.

I waited.

she got halfway across.

I drove past.

we never spoke of this.
