The peace of knowing that, indeed, I am a Child of God
I grew up as a member and attending the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the most beloved hymns in the church, taught to the Primary children, and sung by the adults is “I am a Child of God.” The lyrics, penned by Naomi Randall are quite simple. Simple enough for primary children as young as three to learn. However, as an adult I have come to appreciate the profound message.

Every night during my prayer I mention your name. It’s true, I do. I always have. Not to be confused with the habit of mindless repetition, on the contrary, I pray for you so that I will remain mindful. I don’t want to forget about you or your troubles. So, when I say I pray for you, please know I think of you and your situation and I pray for your success. I used to think your success meant your health and well-being. But now I know better. My current prayer for you sounds a bit different.

Satan wants to make us miserable. God wants us to be happy. Read that again. Satan wants us to lose our freedom. The best way he accomplishes that is by enticing temptations that we choose to indulge in and lose the Spirit of God. On the other hand, God wants us to use our choices to be happy by freely living under His law and bounds.

There is a common notion these days that we are independent creatures. “Live your life” as you want to or need to. Yes, I agree this is quite compelling. Yes, I agree that no one should live their life based on another person’s ideals or worse, wants. You need to live your life to the best of your ability and according to the dictates of your own conscience. But, you have to realize there is a caveat to that. A life filled with love means you are not truly as independent as you think. Your actions will affect others.
