When Goal Becomes Master

Every day I count –

I count my miles.

How many miles a day

do I walk?

I walk at least 5.

I track my distance.

How do I track my distance?

I slap a band around my wrist

and as a second witness

I carry my phone.

The band I wear.

The phone I carry.

Everywhere.

Every little step counts and

helps me reach my goal.

Will the earth stop rotating

if I miss goal?

Will nations crumble

if I miss goal?

Probably not

but let’s not chance it.

No.

No one will know but me

and I will only know for that day

or maybe week.

Because the next day

and the day after that

I will reach goal.

I am always stepping

and counting

toward my goal.

Except for Sunday.

I call it ‘no count Sunday.’

My band remains plugged in.

My phone can be set down.

No count Sunday I am

free of counting

free of goal.

Until I slap that band

on my wrist

Sunday night

to prepare for counting

Monday morning.

Monday through Saturday

I wear the band and

carry my phone

because I have made myself

a slave to counting.

But on no count Sunday

I am free.
