My friend JJ is moving home to North Carolina on Tuesday. Even though she will be missed here, I can’t begrudge her the opportunity to be closer to family. And to live in a warmer climate. I might be a little jealous regarding that last note. Anyway, JJ and her husband are packing as I’m typing this blog and they are getting ready to move their not so little U-Haul 2100 miles. That’s a little bit longer adventure than my 187 mile U-Haul trip this past summer. Instead of three hours like it took NJ and me, it will take them 3 days. Ick. The family closeness thing better be worth it.
I Believe There are Angels are Among Us
My dad insists we live among angels. He maintains that angels aren’t confined to otherworldly beings. Some exist with flesh and blood. They are imperfect but have one perfect moment in which they are in the right time and right place. For some, they might have a series of moments. I’m hoping I’ll have at least one perfect moment in which I can be somebody else’s angel. That I’ll be in the right place at the right time to help somebody. As opposed to my habit of wrong time, wrong place. But that’s a topic for another blog probably dealing with my own psychoanalysis. Or just a private journal entry.
Only a Dream
I had my first posthumous dream of my mom last night. She looked circa 1988 – the same year my brother and sister-in-law were married. In other words, 1988 was a photo op year for our family and we have plenty of pictures of even the most camera-shy of us. Including mom.
All of her family formed a line and instead of hugging her, we bombarded her with questions. Mom was always command central in our family and since she’s been gone, certain things have, well, kinda fallen to pot. It started with not being able to find the prepaid funeral arrangements for her. We found the paperwork finally. She had put everything we needed in a file labeled, “Funeral Arrangements.” Go figure.
Since then, we have looked for titles to cars (found in a file labeled, Cars), bills, tithing checks, etc. You name it, we’ve had to search for it. Or so it seems. So when she appeared in my dream last night, each of us had plenty of questions for her. Mine had to do with a certain recipe that hasn’t worked out so well for me. I never did get an answer – shucks.
I remember the look on her face after all the questions. She seemed to say, “I came all the way back – for this?” In my dream I thought, “This isn’t so bad. I can still communicate with mom.” But then I woke up. As the day wore on and I realized it was just a dream, I sunk back into the reality of, “No, I can’t communicate with mom anymore.” Dang me! Hopefully, in my next dream I’ll have the presence of mind to ask fewer questions and give more hugs.
A Brief Note
Here’s what happened: I went to bed the other night watching “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Jim Carrey version). When I woke up the next morning, I posted this to my facebook status:
A different kind of Christmas this year.
Along with laughter, I’ll probably shed a tear.
I so wish that you were here,
And hope you are somewhere near –
To enjoy the celebration with us.
How I miss you – Mrs. Christmas!
To borrow the words of the Grinch –
Oh no – I’m speaking in rhyme!
To Gift or Gift Card – That is the Question
Another holiday season is winding down. We are done with the big gift giving day for another year. The bottom of the Christmas trees still standing look stark and naked with only their skirts showing. The same skirts were completely hidden a week ago underneath all the presents. Ah, the presents. I love seeing a tree surrounded by carefully wrapped (or in my case, creatively wrapped) boxes. I made a pledge this year due to my thin wallet that I was going to go easy with Christmas presents this year. That lasted about two weeks after the tree was up. The tree seemed to call to me, “Please, can I have some presents here to hide my nakedness?” I gave in and went to town. That’s small town talk – it means I went shopping.
The Visiting Angel
Somewhere between still awake and sweet sleep –
Before I drifted into the deep
An image came to my mind so crisp and clear –
I wondered if I were really here.
It’s a Christmas Miracle!
Ah, the holiday season is upon us. The snow (yuck), the decorations (pretty), the operative-like skills it takes to procure and hide the perfect present (stressful), and of course, the movies. Generally, I like the movies. Or, at least, I get sucked into watching a lot of movies (darn Hallmark channel and ABC Family with their countdowns to Christmas). Since I’ve seen so-very-many movies of the genre, I am a self-proclaimed expert on the subject. A miracle is a must in any self-respecting Christmas movie. It is my thesis that there are generally three Christmas miracles.
The Detour
I moved in with my parents seven years ago. Yes, I realize the stigma of someone in their late 30’s living with the folks. You know, I must be the “special” daughter. It comes as a surprise to me also. According to my life plan I made when I was in Young Women, I was to marry at the age of 22. Start having children at the age of 24 – evenly spaced until I hit 30. So, I’m a little behind schedule. The plan when I moved back seven years ago was for me to get established in the community, take care of the house while my parents served a mission, and then buy it from them when they returned.
Plans change. Before my dad retired and my parents could serve a mission my mom became sick. She spent four years putting up a valiant fight against cancer. Instead of taking care of the house while they were gone, I took care of it while they were here. I had the great privilege and opportunity of taking care of my mom. I’m not going to lie or sugar coat it – it got rough. Especially at the end. It was physically exhausting and I’d break down emotionally a lot during the last month.
However, I believe there is one valuable lesson we are sent here on Earth to learn. That is service. During my reading of the Book of Mormon this past summer I marked ways to come unto Christ. My book was well marked by the end. Finally at the end of the book, a prophet named Mormon made a recommendation that seemed to sum everything up. He said, “But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love” (Moroni 7:47-48). After studying ways to come unto Christ all summer, it seemed as if these verses told me: after everything you do, just be nice to each other.
There are some people who naturally have this great talent. But there are others of us who are selfish beings and need to learn this principle throught lots and lots of practice. Charity does not come naturally to me. So how do we learn it? It’s my belief the Lord has prepared a way by two great callings: the Priesthood and Motherhood.
But what if we don’t have the opportunity to become mothers? Speaking only for myself, how can I learn to serve? I had the privilege of serving my mom. She served me for 38 years so it was only a drop in the bucket of repayment.
I’m not claiming I served perfectly. “I’m sorry,” I’d say when I helped her put a shirt on and it got snagged on her nose, “I never had any kids to practice this on.”
“That’s okay,” she’d say patiently and try to help me do a better job.
I’m still a very selfish being. However, for the short time I got to step outside of myself and serve someone who had taught me how to serve was a blessing and an honor. Don’t pity me. I’m now thankful that my life didn’t follow the plan I’d made years ago. Some detours are more beautiful than the straight course.
What If: The Newest Angel
This is completely a work of fiction based on my own thoughts. Its intent is to bring comfort on the big What If… I consider it to be made of 88% speculation and 12% hope. Or maybe it’s the other way around? Be warned – it’s quite lengthy. I guess I’ve got a lot of speculating to do. Continue reading
The Great Dandelion War: A Tribute to My Mom
I wanted to speak at my mom’s funeral – sorta. I wanted to but I didn’t have confidence that I’d be able to when it came time so I declined. Now I wish I had been able to say a public goodbye and give my mom a tribute from her favorite child…okay, I just added that last part to get a rise from NJ who will undoubtedly read this. That was one thing both my parents made sure we understood: there were no favorites. However, I think each of us kids might have thought we were because mom was each of our best friend. Even though she made it understood Dad was always her true best friend. Continue reading
