A quote I read “Life was cheap in war” said by Martin Cohn in Unbroken written by Laura Hillenbrand, pg 87 is the inspiration for this poem.
The soldier preparing for battle
about to do the dirty chore
looks at his buddy on the left
and his pal on the right
and realizes life is cheap in war.
He squares his shoulders
swallows his fear down to his core
thinks only of his cause
and his momma back home
and hates that life is cheap in war.
His dreams are on hold
as he tries to think what he’s there for
the enemy must be hated
and can’t be equal to human
because all life is cheap in war.
