Night owls and early birds… wait, don’t some owls eat birds?

The mythical and unknown (and often blamed) “they” say opposites attract.  Perhaps they are right.

My dad has always been an early-to-bed early-to-rise type of fellow.   He would have made a pretty good rancher.  Well, that is, if ranching didn’t have to deal with so many dirty, messy animals.

My mom on the other hand was definitely a night owl.  She’d stay up late at night working on various projects.  It wasn’t her fault if the best ideas came while the Sandman made his rounds.

My parents have four children.   My brother, RH, had night owl tendencies as a youngster but life and old age has converted him to the virtues of being an early bird.

I think my younger sister, NJ, just goes with the flow.  She adapts to whatever the situation calls for.

My older sister, MZ, has always followed dad’s footsteps in this regard.   You know the type – the people who can’t stay awake to watch a movie because it’s past their bedtime.  And it’s only 9:00pm.

Me? I’ve always been my mother’s daughter when it comes to sleeping patterns.  I can’t help it if I’m only a genius between the hours of 10:00pm and midnight.  It’s not my choice.  And it’s such a small window.

I’m trying to become an early morning disciple though.  I’ve recently made some changes to help in this regard.  However, it’s not looking too promising.

The other night, my eyes were hurting.  My head throbbed.  I felt like a small rickshaw had run me over and done a Good Samaritan number on me.  Not the helpful Samaritan part but I felt like a victim of a hit and run and left alongside the road.  The only relief I felt was when I closed my eyes.

I crawled into bed by 10:17pm.  Let me interject by saying that is very early for me.

So, there I lay with my eyes closed.  Not feeling well.  And I still couldn’t fall asleep before 11:00pm.

  1. That’s so annoying, just doesn’t make any sense does it!? 😦 I’m naturally a night bird, and do quite a bit of my writing as late as possible. I’ve always been inclined to wake up after 10pm at night, even when I was a child this used to happen, drove my parents crazy trying to get me to sleep. I think I saw sleep as something that got in the way of having fun! I wonder if this might have been the same for your mother too – with all her late night projects!?

My biggest problem with sleep is waking up at the wrong time. If I go to bed early, I’ll wake up at 2 or 3am and be wide awake, and not feel like sleeping again until 5 or 6am. So sleep is still an issue even all these years later. If you ever notice me leaving you comment here at a time when you might think “isn’t it the early hours of the morning in the UK?” Well, yes it probably is, and I’m having a stupid night! 😦 But at least I have something intelligent these days to read with all these blogs to wade through, to occupy my mind until it’s ready to go back to sleep, much better than TV!

Did your mother ever do cooking late at night? My grandmother on my mothers side of the family, was often up several times in a night, to prepare certain things in her kitchen that she somehow hadn’t got round to all day! I used to think she was just crazy, but I’m almost doing the same thing now, I seem to turning into her more every day! 😀

  2. My mom didn’t do any cooking. Sewing. Art projects. Crafty things. Sunday lessons. Yes. But she didn’t spend any more time in the kitchen than she had to 😉
I can be laying on the couch all evening but when it comes time to go to bed, I suddenly wake up and want to clean. Or write. Or watch a movie.
You’d think I’d be best suited to work at nights but here’s a source of a lifelong conflict – I prefer to work during the day and being home at night. This means I am always tired.
If I get to sleep though I can usually sleep through the night. Lately, I’ve been able to get to sleep by midnight at the latest. Yay! Maybe I’m on my way to becoming and early bird. Nah 😀
