Continue readingEvery year, usually around the end of August, my niece Bubba invites me to come and spend a few days with her family. A cute family with two red-headed boys as bookends and one sassy brunette sister in the middle. Inevitably, I return home with an collection of stories to share by recounting the week of antics. The oldest will turn 8 in a few months, the youngest will turn 4 a month later. So, yes, there are plenty of stories to share. This one is about Lil B.

My niece’s daughter recently showed me her new skill of riding a two-wheel, grown-up bike. It was quite the feat for her as it was a new skill. Another in a checklist of to-do’s as she grows up. As I looked at her squiggly tire tracks in the dirt I thought there were a few lessons for us in this experience as well.
Continue readingSatan sat at his desk doing paperwork. He hated paperwork but unfortunately, if he was going to destroy the world and every living creature, it was going to take planning. A key quality of his he boasted of every chance he was given was that he was intelligent. So he knew that planning something as grand as the end of an entire world would take careful planning. Planning required paperwork. Which meant he still had work to do even though he was tired and would like to call it a day.
Continue readingI am no longer part of the young crowd. Haven’t been there for quite some time. I’m not exactly part of the old crowd yet but I am closing in on them. Let’s just say I am getting nearer to the old generation and more removed from the younger. Which means I have had time to learn a lesson or two and I am going to share one lesson learned now. It also means I am young enough to know this will probably fall flat and not be received. But I’m going to share anyway. After all this time on this planet, here is my one piece of advice: show up, do the work, give your best.

Continue readingThere once was an old man who lived in a tiny village. This old man lived a fairly simple life. He never had much luxury but he never wanted for anything. To sum it all up, he lived a content life in his little village. The only thing he ever spent money on for himself is chocolate milk. Something about it seemed to both comfort and relax him. The best time to drink it was after a long, grueling day in the field. In fact, he only drank it after particularly grueling days. It was his reward for handling such days. He loved chocolate milk.
