A story is often told,
of a bitter cold Christmas Eve.
Only 6 months into the war
witnesses later shared the lore
of an event hard to believe.
When soldiers traded their guns
for an impromptu field and ball.
Instead of fighting each other
they competed against one another
in a battlefield game of football.
It is truly a miracle
the spirit of Christmas can produce.
As each soldier rested his weapon
while the power of the season
ushered an unofficial Christmas Truce.
Maybe it is time to revisit
as we approach Christmas Eve.
Can we stop with our words of war?
Or is it too much to hope for?
Are there any who still believe?
Instead of dividing ourselves
and drawing lines of them and us
can we come together?
At least, respect one another
as we celebrate Christmas?
We are not on a battlefield
but we could certainly use
for an obvious reason
to feel the power of the season
with our very own Christmas Truce.
