[spoiler alert] More than 20 years later and what have we learned people? The same lesson we learned in the very first movie: there is a very good reason the time of the dinosaur ended before people came onto the scene. The two species do not and should not comingle because we can’t play nice together.
The fourth movie in the series does not attempt to expound on the premise of the very first movie. It’s more of a statement of ‘seriously, don’t do it.’ There is no new revelation and it rehashes the first movie’s storyline and moral of just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. I agree this is a great lesson. It has become a personal motto for me.
Personally, I would have liked to know more about how Jurassic Park became Jurassic World. Unless I’m wrong, the last time we visited Jurassic Park 14 years ago it was still unfit for humans. How did it make the leap to theme park that has been open for years? Did I miss that exposition in the movie?
For me, the line that moved this from enjoyable action to a little cringe worthy is the poor assistant. Movie making 101 – if you’re going to make a character suffer the most horrible, drawn out death in the normal two hour time frame, you either 1) make the death early in the movie before the audience becomes invested in the character, or 2) you make the character do some kind of heinous act so that the audience might even cheer at the death. In the case of this movie, what did the assistant do to not survive? She was asked to babysit, something I’m pretty sure was not in her job description. She lost the boys because they ditched her but again, she was not hired to be a babysitter. She committed no crime befitting her demise. It was uncomfortable to watch.
In the end, would I recommend this movie? No, save your money. Wait for it to come out on video. Or better yet, wipe the dust off of Jurassic Park and watch that again. You won’t miss a beat.
