July was a 5-Saturday month. Which means in June, I was scrambling for a story. I had a few ideas but which one to pursue? One day while on a break from work, I took my daily walk down the sidewalk. There in the gutter was a phone. It was cracked and had definitely seen better days. Instead of picking it up, I left it there thinking someone may come looking for it. Of course, I took a picture of it. Then I forgot about it. It was gone by my next walk the following morning.

Days later, I was going through my photos and I saw the picture. I wondered who could have lost a phone in the gutter? Why was it in such condition? Did the owner come back looking for it?
That’s how the story started to take shape. My first draft seemed quite long and I didn’t think I could fit everything I wanted into only 5 chapters. So, I decided to stretch it into two months. The next 5-Saturday month is September which means only a month in between.
At the time, it seemed like a feasible idea and would be fun. After editing my first draft though I realized it could have probably fit into 5 chapters instead of 10. But by then I had already committed to the idea. I then had to stretch out the story to get it to fit into 10 chapters.
But that just means I already have an idea for next month and an outline. If your comment is something along the lines of “this is totally unrealistic. CK obviously does not know what she is talking about,” I will answer with, “that’s correct!” No, I don’t know any hitmen nor am I familiar with the lifestyle. My knowledge comes from movies. And for a short story that will only be read by a few people realism is not my priority. I am more focused on writing skills and style.
Please do read last month’s story and continue reading next month. The story is only meant in fun.
