Story behind the Post: Plan C

Last month’s Saturday’s short story was a continuation of June’s short story. Every year there seems to be those two months with 5 Saturdays separated by only a month. Every year I say I will not do a 10-part short story again. Every year I end up doing a 10-part short story and regret it. So, yes I did another 10-part short story and no, I don’t regret it. But I still struggled with it.

My struggle with this short story was more about time management. Or my lack of any management in August. Summer is my favorite season and this year I really over-planned. Especially the last 6 weeks. I crammed all of my summer traveling plans into one month.

Combine that with my lack of motivation, and I struggled to get this story together. I remember one time I foolishly said something along the lines of, “I will never write another story piece by piece.” In other words, I wanted to have at least a vision of the story from beginning to end and not decide week by week where it was going. For the record, that is a great goal and I believe in it. I just did not practice it.

Each week I wrote the next chapter and had no idea where it was going. I originally thought it was going to be more of a comedy but then Chuck got sick and well, that changed the tone a bit.

I will say I met deadline every Saturday. Granted, that last chapter was written less than 24 hours before it was published. Not just edited the day before, but written. I edited it less than 12 hours before my publish date. So, if it seems a bit telly and not enough showy, that’s why.

I appreciate all who did stop by for a read. That’s more than I will do because I’m afraid of all the mistakes I’d find. And all the, Oh, I shouldas.

The next 5-Saturday month is November. I could promise you I’ll do better but I no longer make promises like that. I know myself too well at this point.

Thanks for reading!
