Every Year a Feather

Every year we earn a feather.

Every ten years our feathers weigh a pound.

At age 10, our 1 pound of feathers are weighty but we have enough energy we don’t notice.

At age 20, we realize we can shape our 2 pounds of feathers into wings.

At age 30, our 3 pounds of feathers are shaped perfectly for soaring but we begin to notice the weight.

At age 40, 4 pounds of feathers become noticeably heavy and our once perfectly shaped wings begin to droop slightly at the tips.

At age 50, we realize we do not need to soar as high or as long and our flights must become shorter as our 5 pounds of feathers are arching downward.

At age 60, we enjoy occasional short flights and do our best to maintain our feathers.

At age 70, we realize 7 pounds of feathers weighs as much as 7 pounds of rocks and we no longer fly.

At age 80 and up, we know that even though our 8 + pounds of feathers are a burden we are thankful for the burden.
