Oh no! I see I have another flaw
that just popped out of nowhere
but now I have to hide it
and can’t display it
if I want to belong out there.

Continue readingI wrote a book. A small, tiny book. So, I called it a children’s book. I used a bigger font to meet the minimum page requirement. Initially, because it was a children’s book, I wanted illustrations to accompany it. But, if you know me at all, I am not an artist. Since none of my books have actually made me any money, I finally decided to just go ahead and self-publish it. Only after it was published and I received a copy of it did I have someone from the target audience read it. I insisted on her honest review and after a little coaxing she gave me what I wanted. She did not like the story.
Continue readingYou like the way I look today?
A compliment, I admit,
makes me panic a little bit.
What do I have on display?
I am not sure what to say.
Continue readingGrowing up, I was your typical hopeless romantic. If a story had a romance, I was there watching. Especially those geek/popular type story lines (Can’t Buy Me Love, 1987). And if a tv show had that romance plot with the “will they or won’t they” string along, I allowed myself to be strung along. Usually in frustration as I yelled at the tv screen, “Just get together already!” But it was like they couldn’t hear me or something because they wouldn’t. They just toyed with me. And sometimes they had the audacity to never get together! Since I no longer have live television and only do streaming, I have revisited some of those tv couples that led me along with their chemistry-filled teasing. I have to say, watching these with older eyes gives them a new perspective. Like red flags. So many red flags. Here’s a list of couples that made me watch and how I feel about them now.
Continue readingLast month’s short story was about a fictional singer that rose to prominence in the 1980’s. Probably what we would call a one-hit wonder, his flame died out fairly quickly at a young age. While I wanted to give Jimmy B. a happy ending, I just couldn’t realistically see how that was possible. So, it was a bit of a downer. Apologies for that.
Continue reading“Is your homework done?” Amanda asked her daughter Millie even though she knew the answer.
“I am just getting to it,” Millie replied rolling off the futon.
“I bet,” her mother said and picked up the remote. “Let’s get rid of the distractions, shall we?” she aimed it at the television but stopped before turning it off.
“Whatever happened to Jimmy B.?” the unseen announcer in the television show asked. “This is VH1 and you are watching Behind the Music, stay tuned.”
Amanda sat down on the futon.
“Mom?” Millie asked. “What are you doing?”
“I loved Jimmy B.!” she said. “You know, he was my very first concert.” She looked at her daughter. “I was probably about your age.”
Continue readingThe camera is not my friend.
Mainly because it lies
and shows a stranger on-screen
someone I do not recognize.
Continue readingJimmy B sighed and closed his eyes. He hated playing this particular venue. Two years ago he played at this arena and his whole life changed. That was his first big concert with 20,000 screaming fans. Nothing could have prepared him for the whirlwind that night thrust him into.
For starters, his mom and his manager Pete drew definite lines after that concert. Neither one was willing to give an inch on Jimmy’s future. Pete was concerned with the bottom hard line: money and profit. Namely his. Jimmy’s mom was more motivated toward making sure her son was healthy and happy. The two lines never crossed and Jimmy was stuck in the middle. He often felt like a rope in a tug of war.
